The island of Barbados and some of the finest Luxury hotels on the West Coast of Barbados have come together to celebrate a “Year of Sport” by launching the Barbados Cup on Sunday June 11th the first of what will become an annual event in the Hurtwood Park Polo Club Calendar. Polo in Barbados can trace its roots back more than 130 years and has been based at Holders Hill in the parish of St James since 1965. The picturesque Holders Polo Field, overlooking the West Coast of Barbados was for many years the only home to the sport in the island, but additional fields have been developed over the past decade or so, allowing Barbados to develop as a polo capital. Today, teams from all over the world visit the polo fields in Barbados. A busy polo calendar runs between December and early May, encompassing the island’s major tourist season. Many local games can also be found being played right through summer. All visitors are welcome to matches across the island, which are scheduled a few times a week during the season, with local matches often staged as “warm-ups” for the growing number of International Tournaments.
Barbados is renowned for its warm hospitality off the field, and is now firmly on the world polo map as a destination where the sport flourishes and the social scene excels with many fine restaurants and bars, not to mention the excellent luxury hotels just steps from soft white sand beaches and warm Caribbean waters.
